Natural Medicines Update

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database eUPDATE and eCE Here are just a few of the hundreds of updates we've made to Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database this month. You can learn more about these and thousands of other natural medicines by accessing the Database. Plus you can get fully accredited continuing education credits.• Vitamin D supplements will now be needed for most children to meet the new higher recommendations. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends 400 IU/day starting just days after birth and continuing through adolescence. This is twice the previous recommendation of 200 IU/day. This lower amount is usually not enough to maintain adequate levels. There are not many dietary sources of vitamin D. Milk and infant formula are the best sources, but they only contain about 100 IU of vitamin D per cup. This means that only babies and children who drink at least one quart a day of formula or milk get enough vitamin D. Just about everyone else will need a supplement, including breastfed babies. For infants, recommend drops such as Tri-Vi-Sol or Poly-Vi-Sol. For older kids, recommend an appropriate multivitamin. Advise parents not to overdo it. Tell them not to exceed 1000 IU/day for infants under 12 months or 2000 IU/day for older children and adults.• PartySmart is a new supplement used to protect the liver and decrease hangover symptoms after heavy drinking. It contains multiple ingredients including andrographis, grape, amalaki, wild chicory, dates, and bhumy amalaki. Research in animals suggests that PartySmart reduces hepatic enzymes and increases metabolism of alcohol byproducts that contribute to hangover symptoms. Preliminary clinical research suggests that it might reduce some symptoms of hangover; however, poor study quality limits the reliability of these findings. The manufacturer recommends taking PartySmart a half-hour before the first drink or sometime during drinking. Until there is better evidence, advise patients not to rely on this product for preventing liver damage or hangover symptoms.• Coffee can now be added to the list of interactions with levothyroxine (Synthroid, Levothroid, etc). Drinking coffee when levothyroxine is taken delays the time to peak concentration and decreases levels by 27% to 36%. Coffee is thought to bind levothyroxine in the gut and prevent absorption. This interaction can be avoided by separating coffee consumption and administration of levothyroxine. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least an hour before drinking coffee.Get the latest information and evidence about kava, valerian, St. John's wort, and many other natural medicines use for anxiety in our latest course, Natural Medicines in the Clinical Management of Anxiety.Tell a colleague about this service by forwarding this Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database eUPDATE.Tell the editors if you ever can't find a product that you are looking for.
